Add Programs To Start Menu
To quickly add a program to the Start menu, all you need to do is drag the icon onto the Start button. To remove it, right-click on the Start button, choose OPEN, then delete the one(s) you don't want there anymore.
Add-Ons For Windows 95
Microsoft Win95 developers have come up with a series of unsupported add-on's to Win95. These add-on's allow you to do anything from play a CD on your taskbar to replacing that square clock with a round one to a control panel that changes some of the lesser-known settings. To download these, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/info/powertoys.htm
Add/Remove Programs
Are there programs listed in your Add/Remove Programs list that don't exist anymore?
There's a control panel made by Microsoft that can help you clean them up, as well as
change other hard-to-find settings in Windows 95. The program is called TweakUI, and it's
part of the Win95 Powertoys collection. It allows you to remove annoying icons from your
desktop (like the Inbox, Network Neighborhood, change menu speeds, etc.), and much more.
To download this handy utility, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/info/powertoys.htm
Note: The programs found on the above page are not supported by Microsoft. All use of them
is at your own risk.
Avoid The Recycle Bin
To delete files without sending them to the recycle bin, select the file or files to be
deleted. Right-click the selection and hold the Shift key down while selecting Delete.
NOTE: If you avoid the Recycle bin, you will not be able to recover the files that avoided
it.
Desktop Shortcuts
To place Shortcuts on your desktop:
- Click the item, such as a file, program, folder, printer, or computer, that you want to create a shortcut to.
- On the File menu, click Create Shortcut.
- Drag the shortcut icon onto the desktop.
Display
To change the way the items on your desktop look like:
- Click on Display Properties on you setting box to view Display properties.
- If you want to change the appearance of only one screen element, click that element in the Item list. Then, change the settings in the Item Size, Color, Font Size, and Color areas.
If you want to change the appearance of all screen elements simultaneously, click an
appearance scheme in the Scheme List.
FAT32 or FAT16?
Are your system's hard drives FAT32 or FAT16? To find out, open my computer, right click
on your hard disk and select properties. Alongside File System you'll see FAT on
FAT16 disks and FAT32 on FAT32 disks.
Frequent Settings Changes
If you change your Windows 95 settings frequently, you can copy all the CAB files from
the WIN95 folder onto your Windows 95 CD folder on your computer (like WIN95CABS). That
way, you don't have to search for it every time a new program, driver, etc. is installed.
The CAB files take up about 34 megabytes (MB). When Win95 looks for the CD, simply point
it to the new folder!
How Much Space Left?
If you want to see how much space is left on your hard drive, there are a few places
you can look.
First, you can open a My Computer window and select your hard drive icon. The status bar
will display its Free Space and Capacity.
Second, you can open an Explorer window and select any item on your hard drive. Again, the
status bar displays your disk free space. (To display the status bar in either window,
select Status Bar under the View menu.)
The third option is to show a pie graph that displays free vs. used space. To display this
graph, in a My Computer or Explorer window, right-mouse click your hard drive icon and
select Properties.
Mouse Trails
The mouse pointer is easier to see on laptop computers if you turn on pointer trails. Just
double-click the Mouse icon in Control Panel, and then click the Motion tab. You can make
it as long or short as you want it.
Moving The Taskbar
If you don't like the Windows 95 taskbar at the bottom of your screen, left-click on any
blank area of the taskbar and drag it to the side of the screen you want. ALSO, if you
have many windows open and can't read what each one is, put your cursor on the edge of the
taskbar and drag it to make it bigger.
Setting The Clock
To set the clock on the bottom of the screen, double click on the time and the setup
screen will appear. Adjust the times, and then hit Time Zone. Select your time zone so you
won't have to reset the clock.

Switching Applications
Have you ever been in one application and wanted to switch over to an already opened
program? This is how you do it! Notice: This only works if 2 or more application are
currently open.
* To Switch an application, simply hold down the Alt and Tab keys. Then scroll through the
selections by pressing Tab. This will allow you to switch from program to program.
The Send To Feature
There's a folder in the WINDOWS directory called SEND TO. By creating shortcuts in this
folder to your favorite applications, you can right click files, select Send To, and send
the file to any of the applications on the list. This is a great way to send unknown file
types to a default text editor, like Notepad.
Wallpapering
If you see an image while in your browser that you want as wallpaper, right click the
image and select Set As Wallpaper. This works in both MSIE and Netscape.
Which Windows Properties?
The easiest way to tell which windows you are using is to right click on my computer. Under system on the general tab you will see the Windows version listed. This is what the numbers mean.
